Over 300,000 local and foreign travellers visited the Bagan Archaeological Museum in NyaungU District, Mandalay Region, in the 2017-2018 fiscal year, said U Nyi Moon, the Deputy Director of the Archaeology and National Museum Department.
The Bagan Archaeological Museum is situated south of the Gawdawpalin temple in old Bagan, NyaungU Township.
It is open daily from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm, except on Mondays and public holidays.
The museum charges an entrance fee of K5,000 for foreign tourists and K500 for local travellers.
“The older archaeological museum was opened in 1904 near the northern entrance of the Ananda temple. Later, a modern museum was built and opened in October, 1979.
In early 1995, construction began on a new museum, built along international standards, near the site of the old museum.
The new museum was opened on 17 April, 1998,” said U Nyi Moon.
The museum near Gawdawpalin temple was constructed on a plot of land measuring 10.97 acres.
The museum houses 10 exhibition rooms, including a special display room, and rooms featuring Bagan architecture, Bagan arts and crafts, Bagan palace city, Bagan literature, Bagan social life, Bagan Buddhist art, Bagan Buddha images, Bagan frescos, and Bagan paintings depicting pagodas and monuments.
Over 10,000 artefacts are on display at the museum. The museum staff explain the history of those items to travellers.
The museum was visited by 304,099 local travellers and 10,000 tourists in the 2017-2018 fiscal year.
